Rollhead application for door sealer
ThyssenKrupp Drauz Nothelfer has developed a new robot controlled door sealer application, a device that automatically applies the sealer on the door aperture in the required position.
This innovation is an alternative to the conventional plate application with the fundamental difference that the sealer gets rolled on instead of being pressed on.
The robot controlled door sealer application can be accomplished using two different concepts. The first concept uses a stationary rollhead application with the door being handled via a material handling robot. The second concept features a stationary part in a precision fixture with a robot controlled roller head. In both cases the door sealer is an endless sealer coming from a magazine. The sealer strip is automatically precision cut once the endless sealer strip completes the door sealer path and reaches the initial starting point. The customer can choose from either concept for a production solution that best suits his operation.
Optimisation of approved technology
ThyssenKrupp Drauz Nothelfer has been involved in the fundamentals of automatic rollhead applications since 1993. Allready in 1993 the former Nothelfer implemented the first application of this type of equipment for the BMW E39.
For the BMW project, a sealer for the roof opening was glued through a fixture with a predefined sealer path. During further continuous sealer application projects over the past decades, Drauz Nothelfer continues to improve this technology with further state of the art innovations. Drauz Nothelfer is leading the way with innovations of robot controlled sealer applications.
Numerous advantages
Measurements of pressure distribution have shown that the constant and regular pressure on the rollhead results in optimum adhesion of the sealer.
In addition, the door seals are not stressed during the sealer application process, resulting in better quality due to the elimination of sealer tape stretching during the application process. The rollhead application assures better quality and a high technical availability.
Flexible process for various vehicle models
The "Automatic Rollhead Application" offers high flexibility in regard of part geometry. Changes in part geometry can be adapted in a very short time.
In addition, the system is compatible for model and variant changes, when using the same sealer profile. This technology can be set up for different parts (i.e. doors, side panel, tailgate, roof opening…etc.).
With vehicle model mixes continuously changing, the rollhead application can offer, in conjunction with continuous improvement of sealer features, a decisive arguments for the Original Equipment Manufacturer.
