Best-Fit

The optimum solution for closure assembly
With the Best-Fit process ThyssenKrupp Drauz Nothelfer - in co-operation with Inos-Automation as its partner for sensor technology and image-processing software - has developed an assembly technology which enables the optimum fitting accuracy of the closures during assembly in the automotive production by means of a vision system driven robot. Best-Fit is a flexible process which can be used for the assembly of various closure parts as well as for model variants. The modular Best-Fit concept is based on a sensitive robot which measures both the part and the dimensions of the body by means of optical sensors and determines the gap-optimising position of the door. Thus, the best possible fitting accuracy is achieved for every single assembly process which allows the optimum consideration of the manufacturing tolerances.

Best-Fit: a process proven in series production
The Best-Fit process has been tried and tested in practice and is already in successful use in the series production of the new Porsche 911 model series for the fully automatic assembly of the doors.

Cost reduction by the use of Best-Fit
  • The robot movements are controlled and operated actively.
  • High-precision fitting significantly reduces the amount of body re-work.
  • Quality control immediately after assembly is possible by using the same equipment. This enables the elimination of a separate Inline measurement station at the end of the finishing line.
  • Statistical evaluation is possible which facilitates the recognition of trends and an appropriate reaction.
The mechanical structure of the overall system is simplified:
  • Steel structure for stationary sensor technology is not required.
  • The design of the gripper is simplified, since the gripper has to hold the component in position only roughly. The exact position is controlled by the robot.
  • An accurate positioning of the component in the collecting position is not necessary.
  • The body can be positioned roughly in the station: Complex floor attachment equipment is possibly no longer required.
The Best-Fit process is insensitive to external influences such as temperature, lighting etc.
  • A separate prioritisation of measurement points is possible.
  • The surface condition of the components has no impact on the process.
  • Robot type, robot manufacturer or ageing of the equipment have no impact on the process.
